Sindh Government and World Bank Advance Dhabeji Water Transmission Upgrade Under KWSSIP

The Government of Sindh, in collaboration with the World Bank under the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Programme (KWSSIP), has launched a major initiative to strengthen Karachi’s water supply system.

The project focuses on modernising the city’s ageing and pressure-strained distribution network to ensure a more reliable and uninterrupted water supply for consumers.

Old Infrastructure Causing Supply Issues

A key component of the project—the enhancement of water transmission from the Dhabeji Pumping Station to Karachi—has now entered its final phase.

According to a spokesperson for the KW&SC, long-standing water shortages in Karachi are largely due to the deteriorated condition of the old Line No. 5. The damaged infrastructure has repeatedly disrupted water flow from Dhabeji.

Therefore, the installation of a new pipeline became necessary. Work on the project is now being expedited to ensure timely completion. Once operational, the new system is expected to significantly improve Karachi’s water supply situation.

To complete the upgrade, full integration with the existing network and installation of modern valves is required. For this purpose, a 48-hour shutdown of nine pumps at Dhabeji Pumping Station has been scheduled.

After the shutdown, seven pumps will resume operation immediately. However, two pumps will remain offline for an additional five days to complete technical work.

During the interconnection process, water supply from the Fourth Phase, K-II, and K-III systems will be temporarily suspended. Nevertheless, other operational systems will continue supply as usual.

The KW&SC spokesperson urged citizens to use water carefully during the maintenance window to avoid shortages and low-pressure issues.
